My first wedding was about fifteen years ago while I was still working as a full time news photographer. Friends asked me to shoot their wedding as if I were covering a news event. They said, "just document the day and get pictures of us being ourselves." I remember thinking "this is not my idea of what wedding photography is; I hope they like the results".

We decided I would be in the background taking pictures of people interacting and sharing the emotions of the day. We did end up taking a number of family pictures at the church; how often is everyone together and willing to take the time for family pictures? Over the years I've learned that most families want at least some group pictures. I've taken a more relaxed approach, trying to replace the stiff, posed look with a more fun look that people can actually relate to.

The photos came back and they were very happy with the results. They recommended me to others. One wedding led to another and eventually into a full time pursuit. I think a lot of people that come into my studio for the first time are wondering what to look for in a wedding photographer.
How do you choose that special someone that will understand you?
One of the first things I do is talk about the difference in style between "traditional" and
"documentary/photojournalism"
I talk about my background and expertise so they know I'm someone who is able to capture all those emotions, interaction with friends, and family groups they are concerned about.
If they want, we can talk about wedding albums, parent books, having a video made of their wedding, having a CD with all the images from their day, etc.
These are just a few of the questions that I like to go over in an interview.
